20 Years of Hallo-Winning

This isn’t the 1st time I’m writing about my Halloween adventures, and it won’t be the last, but this past one was a milestone as the 20th year my barkada has celebrated together. It started when we were in school, young girls wanting to dress up and get some candy. I wasn’t present for all the parties, but every time I went, it was a unique experience that I’ve counted as some of my most treasured times with my girlfriends. I’ve loved this holiday since Trick or Treating around the village with my sister and our neighbors, but I only […]

Food and Hair, New Things Everywhere

By tomorrow, it’ll be 20 days since my last post, and I’ll have been back in Manila for 5. As I’ve gotten older, jet lag has become harder to bounce back from, so I’ve been drifting between sleep and wakefulness at atypical hours. Aside from wishing I were still somewhere else, experiencing new things every day, I came home to a city that’s just about to take a break for the Holy Week. Jam-packed January

January caught me off guard. Once my brain went on vacation in December, it seemed reluctant to come back. Aside from waiting to transition into a new journal that I get as a traditional gift from my sister yearly, I took a breather from being my OC self and figured I’d have time to get my plans all sorted in the new year. I kept saying yes to meetings, parties, and gigs without taking down any dates. When the last holiday ham and rhum cake had been consumed, and the gifts had all been handed out, I knew I could […]

September Surprises

Those last weeks of September just flew by, and I was kept busy by the remaining workouts of the Manila Throwdown, trying out Mystery Manila for the first time, and spending time with family and friends. Some of my best friends’ birthdays are in September, as well as my dad’s. For my dad’s birthday, we hosted a small dinner at home for his high school buddies. Mom, Yaya V, Yaya Rose, and I started cooking as soon as I woke up. On the menu, we had steak, eggplant parmigiana, sardine puttanesca, sweet and sour butterflied tilapia, and mom and I experimented […]

Family Friends

Is the concept of a “family friend” one of those Filipino-isms? I don’t think I’ve ever heard any other nationality use this exact phrase as we do, oftentimes as modifiers instead of nouns. Others say, “she’s a friend of the family,” but we say, “she’s a family friend.” There is also a connotation that the relationship is much deeper than others: a family friend is someone you roll deep with, possibly spent endless summers with when you were younger; and no matter how far life has stretched your band of friendship, across years and miles, you just snap back together […]
